British actress Lucy Gordon, who played a role in the Spider-Man 3 blockbuster, had been found dead in her Paris flat.

Gordon, who will soon appear as British singer Jane Birkin in a biopic of the French crooner Serge Gainsbourg, killed herself in Paris on Wednesday, her agent said.

“Oh my God. I feel terrible for the family. What a tragedy,” Spider-Man director Sam Raimi told reporters at the Cannes film festival after they informed him of the death of the 29-year-old up-and-coming star.

According to press reports in Paris and London she hanged herself in the flat she shared with a boyfriend, who raised the alarm.

Selected scenes from Gordon’s latest movie, Gainsbourg: Heroic Life, have been played this week at the Cannes Film Festival and she was seen in the film industry as a possible future star.

“The film owes a lot to the generous spirit, to the kindess and immense talent of Lucy Gordon,” said the film’s director Joann Sfar and its producers in a statement.

Gordon lived in France, where she was best known for her breakthrough role in Cedric Klapisch’s romantic comedy Poupees Russes (Russian Dolls).

She played the role of journalist Jennifer Dugan in Spider-Man 3, which was released in 2007.

Raimi was in Cannes for a red carpet screening of his new horror flick Drag Me To Hell.
